Here Comes Revenge is the music video created to accompany Metallica’s song of the same name.
Directed by Jess Cope (known for her work on Tim Burton’s Frankenweenie), this dark, digitally animated short is a gothic revenge tale that feels like a standalone horror fable.
Clocking in at around 7-8 minutes, it’s pure narrative-driven art – no band performance shots, just moody visuals carrying the weight. A humanoid hyena (or wolf-like predator) lounges in a shadowy cabin, admiring his wall of mounted animal heads (including a deer, goats, rabbit, and bull) with dresses hung below like twisted trophies. But the prey isn’t done: the “dead” animals reanimate zombie-style (with nods to Evil Dead II), rising up to swarm and brutally exact payback on their hunter. The deer and others turn the tables, making the predator the prey in a cathartic, savage reversal.
The animation – gritty, hand-painted textures done in After Effects for a tactile feel – builds eerie expressionist landscapes, grotesque transformations, and relentless horror-fairy-tale vibes. James Hetfield’s snarling vocals and the heavy riffs drive the chase, but the story’s about grief flipping to predatory justice (inspired by real tragedy: parents losing a daughter to a drunk driver).
